CHAPTER 10

Logan slammed his hand down on the gate controls as soon as he and Kasey ducked inside Keene’s Department Store. He breathed a sigh of relief at the groan and clank of the mechanism as the metal gate descended.

With a bloodthirsty mob tearing itself apart inside the mall, snipers waiting to pick off anyone on the outside, and the minor matter of bombs set to level the building in less than two hours, they were nowhere near safe, but finding time to regroup and figure out a strategy was critical.

He ushered Kasey away from the entrance, toward the back of the store. The gate was a barrier, but not a sturdy one. And it definitely didn’t make them invisible, so it was in their interest to move away.

They made their way to the housewares section and ducked behind a shelf out of site. Logan grabbed a dish towel, grimacing as he pressed it to the back of his head.

When he pulled it away, it was soaked with blood, which wasn’t surprising given the pounding pain he felt from Otto bouncing it off the floor like a basketball.

“Jesus!” Kasey said when she saw the blood. “Let me look.”

Logan went to protest, but he was too late as Kasey put her hand on his back and nudged him forward so she could get a better look.

As she focused on examining his injury, she stopped holding her torn shirt and it fell open, exposing her chest and stomach, a plain white bra the only thing protecting her modesty.

She noticed Logan avert his eyes and immediately became self-conscious. Her skin flushed as red as her ruined garment. She used one hand to hold it closed while examining Logan’s scalp with the other.

Logan couldn’t help a slight smirk. They had just escaped a chaotic riot where many people had been brutally killed, yet they were sitting like awkward teenagers because of a torn shirt.

“Hold on,” Logan said as he pulled off his hoodie, being careful around his head. He handed it to Kasey, leaving him in his cutoff Metallica t-shirt, exposing his muscled arms. “Here.”

Kasey smiled warmly at the chivalrous gesture and surprised Logan by taking off her shirt as if all her embarrassment had abruptly vanished. It wasn’t meant to entice. It was more an acknowledgment of the growing trust between them. She immediately replaced it with the hoodie and said, “Thank you,” before adding, “let’s get a look at that head.”

Logan leaned forward, head down and elbows resting on his thighs as Kasey used the towel to gently dab away the blood around the wound.

“You’ve got a gentle touch,” he told her.

“Yeah, well, that’s the thing about being a boy mom,” she said. “You’re all so quick to throw caution to the wind, but all that rough and tumble goes out the window when you get hurt and run back to Mommy to make it better.”

Logan laughed. “You’re not wrong.”

“Marine?” she asked.

Logan would have wondered how she assumed that, but given what she had seen him do out there, he wasn’t surprised.
